Gusto has been a game-changer for managing payroll in my business. The platform is incredibly easy to use, with an intuitive interface that makes running payroll straightforward and stress-free. One of my favorite features is the email reminders—they're timely and ensure that I never miss a payroll deadline.

I also appreciate how Gusto simplifies tax filings and compliance. Everything is automated, and I can trust that my team is getting paid accurately and on time. Plus, the employee self-service portal is a great touch, allowing team members to access their pay stubs and tax documents with ease.

In December, I submitted a payroll in error. I caught it immediately and Gusto reversed it the same day. Their team told me it was all set—no funds sent out, all cleared and nothing further was needed.

Fast forward to April 28: Gusto suddenly claims I owe over $100,000 tied to that same reversed entry. They blocked my payroll, attempted to debit that amount from my bank account, and when I stopped it, they locked me out of my system—cutting off access to W-2s, 941s, tax filings, and all records I need to stay compliant or switch providers.

Here’s the worst part:

- My 941 doesn’t show any overpayment
- I’ve received no refund or notice from the IRS
- On my first support call, Gusto’s agent even admitted this looks like a system error

It’s been over a week—and despite repeated escalation, no one with decision-making authority has contacted me with any information or update on this matter.

They’ve locked me out of critical payroll and tax documents and are trying to collect a six-figure sum that shouldn’t exist. And they've continually attempted debited the amount out of my bank account.

This behavior breaks multiple standards:

1. IRS compliance (no amended 941 filed, yet collections began)
2. EFTA (attempted unauthorized withdrawal)
3. IRS document access law (they locked me out of my own filings)
4. Breach of good faith and commercial duty of care

Gusto admitted internally that this “appears to be an error”—and still chose to move forward with an aggressive and damaging collection attempt. No communication. No resolution. Just retaliation and silence.

If you’re a small business considering Gusto: don’t. They’ll mishandle your account, turn a system bug into a six-figure threat, and disappear behind a wall of powerless offshore agents.

They are a risk to your compliance, your bank account, and your sanity.

Gusto failed me in the first quarter to file form 941 and now the FDOR is sending me a delinquency notice. Gusto denied responsibility in an email and over the phone. This is first and only payroll service I’ve ever used and I feel they violated fiduciary duty due to their client. Irvin and Bree’s review’s from 2 and 3 months ago are spot on. Business owners beware.

I am now facing legal action due to Gusto's failure to properly file payroll taxes. Despite months of trying to get in touch with them, I have been unable to access any reports or history showing what taxes were paid. Every time I reach out, I’m told that someone is ‘working on it,’ but no actual help or resolution has been provided. This has been an incredibly stressful situation, and their lack of transparency and accountability has put my business in a very dangerous legal position. I strongly advise against using Gusto for any payroll services if you're relying on them for accuracy and compliance."
