Great location and friendly staff, but the rooms need work.

Spyglass Inn is in a beautiful spot and offers a wide range of amenities — from a pool and jacuzzi to fire pits and even s’more kits, which is a nice touch. It’s dog-friendly and fairly affordable compared to neighboring hotels, and the staff is genuinely warm and welcoming.

That said, our stay was just okay. Our room did not face the ocean, and unfortunately, it felt a bit dirty and outdated. The lighting didn’t work properly, and the faucets and shower were covered in calcium and lime buildup, which made the space feel neglected. It was disappointing, especially given the otherwise scenic setting.

The restaurant on-site was closed during our stay, so we ended up eating most meals next door at the Dolphin Inn — great food, by the way. Another downside was the lack of pool rule enforcement. While quiet hours were respected after 10 PM, there were often 6 or 7 kids packed into the pool and jacuzzi at once, making it less relaxing than hoped.

All in all, Spyglass Inn has potential thanks to its location and friendly staff, but the room conditions — especially for those not facing the ocean — are a major drawback. We’ll likely try another spot next time we’re in the area.

We arrived on Easter Weekend and it was packed. Plenty of parking and we checked in right away. Rooms were clean and we were able to get one of the bigger corner rooms. Ask for one of the bigger rooms and you won’t be sorry. We walked down to the beach to enjoy the sunset. The views are amazing. No restaurant on site but we drove a few miles and it was no issue.

I stayed here in the past, and had enjoyed my stay, so was looking it up again for a possible return trip. ||I originally was a little reluctant to book this hotel, as at the time, there were some negative reviews, but all of the hotels usually have some negative reviews, and this one was a bit more affordable, and looked to have nice views. ||We ended up being happy with our room. We loved our view of the ocean! There was a ramp to the 2nd floor, so those with walkers or wheelchairs could still access it. (Assuming it hasn't been remodeled in construction). I loved the restaurant that was attached; there was a beautiful dolphin statue between the restaurant and the ocean, which added to your seaside ambiance. Sadly, it appears that the restaurant has closed. There were fire pits outside, and other seating, as well as a path that runs along the cliffs, and along the long line of hotels facing the ocean, making a nice, easy walking path, with views of the sea, as well as checking out the other hotels and restaurants along the way. ||This hotel was in my consideration for a return visit. It is worth checking out, if planning to stay in the area.

For the cost of the room, I expected more. ||||The view was great. ||||The rooms needed updating, lots of noise from people walking in room above us. ||||Restaurant and Jacuzzi were closed. ||||Room was dimly lit. ||||Overall. I'm likely to choose different accommodations next time.

I was disgusted after our stay here. We decided to stay an extra night in pismo & looked for a last minute hotel, we paid $265 for a room here. Upon getting into our room, I went to put leftovers in the fridge, to which I found an old, moldy Starbucks cup. After throwing it away I went outside to the patio, where I was greeted by a smelly baggie of poop…. Even though they’re not pet friendly, there was a small dog next door to us, and a husky above us. We could hear the little dog ALL night. Went to bath my child, when I found black mold in the grout in the shower. We skipped bath time and waited until we got home. I seriously felt like I paid $20 to stay in a bum motel, but I actually paid a very high amount for a “luxury” hotel. Disgusted doesn’t even scratch the surface, we will never be back here. Asking to switch rooms wasn’t an option either, I overheard them say they were sold out to another guest who was upset about their room.

Awesome stay. The Spyglass Inn is a beautiful hotel. Definitely recommend staying in the ocean front side rooms. We love the Pismo/Shell Beach area as there are lots of good restaurants, beautiful sights and great hiking trails. We plan to come back again soon!

Cute, friendly, hotel right off the bluffs. We stayed in a pet-friendly room, which smelled pretty strongly of fragrance upon check-in. I'm sure this was due to cleaning supplies and is pretty common, but I am allergic to fragrance. The room was not fabulous, but I bet the ocean view rooms are amazing. Overall I would stay here again, but preferably without a pet 🙂

Beautiful gardens and good outdoor accessible paths to see cliffs and ocean. Gas Fireplaces outside a plus. No elevator, many rooms without ocean view. Paths lead to other views, hotels and dining options. Room large and comfortable, clean hot tub.
