The tragic story of one of the first pioneers in the Verde river area happened here. Irishman Patrick and Annie White’s story starting in Ireland and coming to America is what the American dream is all about. They had bought land in this area from Elisha Reevis, the hermit of Superstition Mtns himself & continued to dig a canal in the area of Needle rock for over 2 miles down to their property here along the Verde. The troops of Ft Mcdowell burned the White’s ranch thinking it was on the Ft McDowell Military Reservation, it wasnt. Patrick White defiantly defended his life’s work for naught. He went senile from the event and eventually died. He was a hardworking wheelwright/blacksmith, considered as one of the best wagon makers in the US Army, that had retired as Corporal at Ft McDowell in the US Army with over 20 years service. The legendary fight his wife gave the US Army to clear her husbands name & property after his death is one that shouldnt be forgotten.
