Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute is Alaska’s largest fisheries research facility. The lobby is open daily to the public and it is definitely worth a visit. Impressive salt water aquariums in the lobby provide uninterrupted viewing of Alaskan marine life for everyone's enjoyment. Science-based educational guided tours of the facilities (including a touch tank for close encounters with Alaskan marine life!) and lectures that use the Science on a Sphere visualizations (available only in a handful of places around the world) are offered weekdays at 13:00 hrs., June through September. This facility, which is entirely heated by 100% renewable green energy, also offers fantastic views of Lena Point and whale watching opportunities from indoor and outdoor observation decks with complimentary use of scopes and binoculars; interesting landscaping, Ray Troll fish sculptures, and outdoor seating areas.

Beautiful views combined with great people doing amazing things. From the Yukon salmon out to the plankton in the middle of the Bering Sea, they study it all. And they are more than happy to tell you all about it.

I suggest calling ahead to make sure they are open and the local experts are not out in the field.
